Understanding the Upper Cervical Area
The upper cervical area of the spine is very unique. The upper cervical region of the spine consists of the vertebrae at the top of the spine the upper neck, and comprises the skull along with the C1 and C2 vertebrae. The first vertebra (C1) is called the Atlas, and it’s named after the Greek god who held up the world. It’s appropriately named because this vertebra is so important; it holds up your world, your head.
Most chiropractors agree that this is the most important area of the body because this is where the brain meets the spinal cord. It’s literally the meeting point of your mind-body connection. Because of this, when a subluxation or misalignment interferes with the nervous system, your nervous system will go into a defensive mode, sensing this imbalance. This “defensive mode” is called the “fight or flight” or sympathetic state. In the short term, the fight or flight state is beneficial, but if left unchecked for an extended period, it can have many detrimental effects on the body. Various conditions can arise or be exacerbated by the upper cervical vertebral subluxation. If there’s a misalignment or subluxation in this region of the spine, it can interfere with the way your body works, heals, and feels.
Examining the Upper Cervical Region
At Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Monmouth, we specialize in correcting imbalances and misalignments of the entire spine. The upper cervical region is an effective entry point since it’s one of the highest neurological control centers for postural muscles. Our chiropractic specialty is Quantum Spinal Mechanics 3 (QSM3), which requires additional education and training. Our consultations include an initial sit-down with one of our doctors, which gives you the time and space to explain what you are experiencing and how your condition is impacting your quality of life.
We want you always to feel heard, so we make this a private, unhurried experience that allows you to be listened to and understood. Once we’ve learned about your condition, we’ll make a determination about whether it is a condition that may respond to our care. If we feel like a good candidate for our care, we’ll move on to a physical examination, which includes using a variety of innovative imaging and diagnostic tools, including X-rays (if needed), that allow us to gain a greater understanding of the current health of your spine and nervous system.
After your exam and your X-rays (if needed), we’ll determine exactly how to approach your care. We’ll formulate an individualized plan since care recommendations are always based on each person’s situation.
How an Upper Cervical Correction Works
Some people are nervous, hesitant, or anxious about undergoing a chiropractic adjustment, so we want you to completely understand what an upper cervical adjustment is and what you can expect. First of all, it’s essential to know that there are no popping, harsh movements, or jarring actions involved in an upper cervical adjustment. In fact, it’s a very gentle process that uses small, precise movements that are barely perceptible to most patients.
At your adjustment appointment, you’ll remain fully clothed (no need to change into a gown; your street clothes are just fine) and lie on your side. Your doctor will gently contact this vital area of the spine. These motions will start to release the tension and adjust the spine to achieve a healthier body alignment. These bones weigh only several ounces, so we don’t need much force to move them. It’s so gentle that we adjust little children up to seniors. We even take care of many people who’ve already had spinal surgery but still suffer from post-operative pain.
Benefits of Upper Cervical Alignments
QSM3 is a safe, gentle, and effective. It’s non-invasive, so you don’t have to worry about some of the potential side effects that could occur with more invasive spinal procedures such as spinal injections or surgery. This care is entirely drug-free, so there’s no risk of addiction to pain medication or unpleasant side effects that come with many medications. An upper cervical alignment relieves the body of the stress and imbalance that leads to inflammation and chronic pain conditions, allowing the body to heal itself. When your nervous system is not in a constant state of distress (i.e., the subluxated state) from a misalignment, this is when true healing can begin.
If you or someone you know has been suffering from a spinal or neurological condition and has not been able to get an answer from conventional medical avenues, upper cervical chiropractic may offer a safe, effective alternative. Contact our office if you’ve been searching for a solution that doesn’t require drugs or surgery. Our team is ready to help you schedule your complimentary consultation with one of our doctors.
